Polished, whole Ammonite from Madagascar.  This fossil is naturally opalized on both sides creating a beautiful flash of red, pink, and green when the light hits it.  Measures 3" x 3.75".

Ammonites are an extinct group of invertebrates.  They are apart of the Cephalopoda class.  These fossils are closely related to the modern day octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. Ammonites first appeared about 240 million years ago!  They went extinct with the Dinosaurs 65 million years ago.  Ammonites are named after Ammon, the Egyptian god of life and procreation.  He was alway depicted wearing rams horns which resemble the coiled Ammonites.
